Metropolitan Solutions Design Award 2016

What is the secret to making public spaces attractive, livable and inviting? It’s a question that exercises the minds of manufacturers, architects and urban planners the world over. To help uncover the answers, Metropolitan Solutions, Europe’s biggest combined congress and trade show on innovative urban planning, is offering a new award for public interest design.

Applications for the 2016 Metropolitan Solutions Design Award are open from now until 31 March 2016, and the winning concepts will be showcased during Metropolitan Solutions, which will be held in Berlin from 31 May to 2 June 2016. Staged at Berlin’s prestigious CityCube convention complex, Metropolitan Solutions comprises more than 30 high-power conferences and workshops on intelligent, sustainable urban development plus an extensive exhibition program featuring the latest urban development technologies and solutions from leading international companies and organizations.

The purpose of the 2016 Metropolitan Solutions Design Award is to recognize and reward exemplary initiatives to bridge the gap between and integrate private spaces and semi-public and public spaces. The concepts submitted can and should use both high-tech and low-tech design elements to help redefine the livability and amenity value of urban public spaces, focusing on design and sustainability aspects such as user benefit, civic experience, intercultural exchange, the environment and economic efficiency.

The Award has the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, as its official patron and is aimed at manufacturers, urban planners, architects, designers, universities, students and startups. It will be presented in three categories: Best of Professionals, Best of Academics and Best of Startups. The type of public interest design projects that can be submitted is very broad and includes waiting areas, rest and recreation spaces, public art, street furniture, communication systems, cultural meeting points and public spaces for civic engagement.

A special committee will select the winners from among all the entries submitted as at the end of March 2016. Further details, including information on the application process, are available online at: www.metropolitansolutions.de/en/program/design-award/ .

The 2016 Metropolitan Solutions Design Award is offered by Deutsche Messe (the organizers of Metropolitan Solutions) and iF UNVERSAL DESIGN. The media partner is Callwey Verlag, publisher of Baumeister and Topos.
